PEDIGREE
Jim
Barker and Ivan Patterson first met in 1969 when Ivan became an
Apprentice Engineer at Northern Dairies, a large dairy based in Hull.
Jim was the tradesman mentor that took the then fifteen year old Ivan
under his wing and guided him through his apprenticeship. In 1973,
having served his apprenticeship, Ivan joined the Merchant Navy. Here
he spent the next ten years as an engineer travelling the world,
learning new skills from all of the marine engineers he met along the
way and from the absolute necessity of keeping a ship running at
sea. It was during this time that Ivan also met and married his wife Julie, in 1983 he
decided to leave the sea to work ashore and raise his family.
Jim, during this time, had stayed at Northern Dairies, but the dairy
industry was changing and workers being made redundant. So Jim and
Ivan, two very good friends, both at a crossroads in their careers and
with a wealth of
knowledge and experience, decided to set up in business together. In
April 1983 Barker & Patterson was formed. Originally based in a small
workshop not far from the much larger premises they now occupy. They
found work with several local companies, including the dairy where they
had both worked. As their reputation for quality fabrication and
engineering work grew so did their client base They began working for
large company’s like Reckitt and Colman PLC, now Reckitt Benckiser,
Hull City Council and many of the larger building
contractors in the city. They moved to larger premises nearer the city
centre with easy access to the A63 and M62. Jim retired in 2000 and
the company became Barker & Patterson (UK) Ltd, with Ivan as Managing
Director.
